The post Eric Baker first appeared on .]]> Eric Baker is a member of the Squamish Band of the Coast Salish First Nation and grew up in North Vancouver. He is also of Kwakwaka’wakw descent, with indigenous roots in Kingcome Inlet. Eric began to learn the fine art of woodcarving at age eight inspired by the work of Hank Thomas and Marvin Baker. Eric prefers to work in red and yellow cedar, which his ancestors have been carving for generations. Although Eric has carved many totem poles, he is most proud of the one he carved for a school in Squamish, British Columbia.

Eric continues to share his culture, skills, and knowledge through his work as the First Nations Connections Worker at Port Hardy Secondary School where he teaches water-based navigation and woodworking classes for students interested in carving paddles.

The post Bill Henderson first appeared on .]]> Kwakwaka’wakw Master Carver Bill Henderson was born in 1950 and is a member of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation in Campbell River, BC. Bill is one of seventeen children born to the artist Sam Henderson and his wife, May Quocksister Henderson. Several of his siblings became artists, including his brothers Ernie, Dan, and Mark.  His father Sam was originally from Ba’as (Blunden Harbour), on the north coast, but after marrying May settled in Campbell River. Bill watched his father create carvings and other artworks from a young age and by the age of seven Bill had created his first piece, a small whale plaque for his first-grade teacher.
